More Than a Beautiful Hotel

Château Frontenac was built between 1892 and 1893 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was the first in a celebrated series of château-style railway hotels designed to encourage travellers to explore Canada by train.

Architect Bruce Price drew inspiration from the grand châteaux of France’s Loire Valley. The steep roofs, imposing towers, ornate dormers and fortress-like walls were intended to evoke the romance of an earlier French era.

The hotel was expanded several times over the following century, gradually developing the distinctive silhouette recognized around the world today.

In 1981, Château Frontenac was designated a National Historic Site of Canada because of its architectural importance and influence on the development of Canada’s grand railway hotels.

A photograph captures the Château’s dramatic outline, but an interior guided visit adds another dimension to the experience.

The hotel’s Bellevue Room is associated with these historic meetings, which helped shape the next stages of the war.

Château Frontenac also hosted representatives from 44 nations in 1945 during the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization, one of the first agencies created within the emerging United Nations system.

Sitting proudly in Boston’s historic Charlestown Navy Yard, the USS Constitution is far more than a beautifully preserved ship. Launched in 1797, she has survived naval battles, changing technology and more than two centuries of American history.

Known affectionately as “Old Ironsides,” the USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned naval warship still afloat—and one of the most remarkable historic attractions you can experience in Boston.

Before seeing this legendary vessel, here are some of the fascinating stories that make her so important.

1. “Old Ironsides” Is Made of Wood—not Iron

The ship earned her famous nickname during the War of 1812 while battling the British warship HMS Guerriere.

As British cannonballs struck the Constitution’s exceptionally strong wooden hull, some reportedly appeared to bounce away. According to tradition, an American sailor shouted, “Her sides are made of iron!”

The nickname “Old Ironsides” was born.

The hull was built using layers of strong timber, including live oak—one of the densest hardwoods available in North America. Combined with the ship’s heavy construction, it gave the Constitution extraordinary strength in battle.

2. She Was Launched in Boston in 1797

USS Constitution was launched on October 21, 1797, from Edmund Hartt’s shipyard in Boston.

She was one of six original frigates authorized to protect the growing maritime interests of the young United States. These ships were designed to be powerful enough to defeat vessels of a similar class while fast enough to escape much larger warships.

The Constitution first sailed from Boston Harbor in July 1798. More than two centuries later, Boston remains her home.

3. The Ship Became a National Hero During the War of 1812

The Constitution achieved her greatest fame during the War of 1812.

Her victory over HMS Guerriere provided the United States with a major boost in morale at a time when the powerful British Royal Navy was widely considered unbeatable. The Constitution later defeated or captured several additional enemy vessels and completed her combat career without being defeated.

News of her victories spread quickly, transforming the ship and her crew into national heroes.

4. Life Aboard Was Anything but Comfortable

The Constitution may look majestic from the shore, but life aboard the ship was demanding.

During the War of 1812, approximately 450 officers, sailors and Marines could serve aboard her. They worked, ate and slept in crowded conditions with limited privacy and few of the comforts we take for granted today.

The crew operated heavy guns, climbed high into the rigging, repaired sails and maintained the ship through storms and combat. Food was preserved to survive long voyages, fresh water was limited and illnesses could spread quickly below deck.

Exploring the ship offers a vivid sense of how much courage and physical endurance naval service once required.

5. She Is Still an Active United States Navy Ship

USS Constitution is not simply a retired vessel displayed as a museum piece. She remains a commissioned ship of the United States Navy and is staffed by active-duty Navy sailors.

Today’s crew maintains the vessel, welcomes visitors and teaches guests about its history. The Constitution also continues to participate in ceremonies and special events.

The ship occasionally gets underway in Boston Harbor, allowing it to turn around so that weather exposure is distributed more evenly across both sides of its historic hull.

6. The Ship Is Larger Than It Appears in Photographs

USS Constitution measures approximately 207 feet along the deck and extends roughly 305 feet when measured from the end of the bowsprit to the rear boom.

Its mainmast rises about 172 feet above the deck. When fully rigged, the ship could carry 48 sails covering approximately 44,000 square feet.

Despite its enormous size and heavy armament, the Constitution could reach a top speed of approximately 13 knots under favourable sailing conditions.

Standing beside the vessel in Charlestown Navy Yard gives you a much better appreciation of its scale than any photograph can provide.

7. You Can Step Aboard a Living Piece of History

Visitors can board USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard, where tours are conducted by active-duty Navy sailors. Admission to the ship is free, although visitors must pass through security and adults should carry an accepted physical government-issued photo ID.

Because this is an eighteenth-century warship, visitors should also expect steep stairs, narrow passageways, uneven surfaces and limited accessibility aboard the vessel.
