Why This Guided Visit Is So Special

Château Frontenac has discontinued its regular interior excursion program. However, the hotel will honour CosmoVista Tours’ previously confirmed one-hour guided visits for two upcoming departures:

More Than a Beautiful Hotel

Château Frontenac was built between 1892 and 1893 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was the first in a celebrated series of château-style railway hotels designed to encourage travellers to explore Canada by train.

Architect Bruce Price drew inspiration from the grand châteaux of France’s Loire Valley. The steep roofs, imposing towers, ornate dormers and fortress-like walls were intended to evoke the romance of an earlier French era.

The hotel was expanded several times over the following century, gradually developing the distinctive silhouette recognized around the world today.

In 1981, Château Frontenac was designated a National Historic Site of Canada because of its architectural importance and influence on the development of Canada’s grand railway hotels.

A photograph captures the Château’s dramatic outline, but an interior guided visit adds another dimension to the experience.

Inside, architectural details reveal the craftsmanship and elegance that helped make the hotel a national symbol. Historic public areas feature elements such as dark wood panelling, decorative stone, marble staircases, wrought-iron details and carefully preserved heritage displays.

A Landmark That Witnessed History

Château Frontenac has welcomed royalty, political leaders, artists and international celebrities throughout its history.

Its most consequential role came during the Québec Conferences of 1943 and 1944. During the Second World War, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King gathered at the Château to discuss Allied military strategy.

The hotel’s Bellevue Room is associated with these historic meetings, which helped shape the next stages of the war.

Château Frontenac also hosted representatives from 44 nations in 1945 during the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization, one of the first agencies created within the emerging United Nations system.

These events transformed the Château from an elegant hotel into a setting connected to major moments in international history.

The experience is followed by guided sightseeing through Old Québec, including a combination of panoramic driving and easy walking. Guests then receive free time to explore the historic district independently.

The Christmas at the Castle Experience

Our November 25–28, 2026 Christmas at the Castle tour offers an even more immersive Château Frontenac experience.

Guests will stay inside the legendary hotel for three nights, with daily breakfasts and the confirmed one-hour guided interior visit included. Outside the doors, Old Québec will be decorated for the holidays and filled with the charming wooden stalls of the German Christmas Market.

Instead of visiting the Château briefly and leaving, guests can wake up inside it, enjoy its festive public spaces and step directly into the Christmas atmosphere of Old Québec.

The tour also includes guided Québec City sightseeing and an Indigenous cultural experience in Wendake.
